News from the Children's RE Department
Wednesday, December 19th, R E teachers, Sky Mitchell and Hollis Pugsley met with R E director, Gelene Grim to discuss plans for the new year.
Hollis said that the teenagers have decided to focus on working to help the UFL "go green."
Sky said that she will continue with her program of literature- based lesson plans. The younger children are learning about the seven UU principles and important holidays of the different world religions. Gelene said she is putting together "emergency" lesson kits so that any qualified adult can take over a class if the regular teacher cannot be there.
Chip Koepke has agreed to drive the building of the Outdoor Classroom and Don Eakin signed up to work with him. Sky met with them on December 5th and it was decided that the storage shed would have to be moved, fill dirt would be need to somewhat level the area, and fencing would need to be put up. Future projects will include building a wall using glass jars and cement and installing gutters and down spouts to collect water in rain barrels which can be used for watering plants.

Have You Gotten Your 2008 Calendar Yet?
SOUTHWESTERN UU DISTRICT SPRING CONFERENCE Friday - Sunday, April 25-27, 2008
YOU are invited to Austin, Texas, to the District Spring Conference, hosted by First UU Church of Austin. It's a "don't miss" UU event.
Our theme is "What the World Needs from Religious Liberals" with two keynote speakers -- David Bumbaugh and Natalie Fenimore -- and worship services with the hosting minister, Dr. Davidson Loehr. David is Professor of Ministry, Meadville- Lombard Theological School in Chicago. Natalie is a Master Credentialed Director of Religious Education in Fairfax, Virginia. Davidson has been minister at First UU of Austin for more than 6 years, has gained a deserved reputation as a scholarly and thought-provoking preacher.
Our workshops will include subjects on: Sustainable Architecture, Talk-backs with the Keynoters, UU History, Update from U-Bar-U, Greening your Grounds, Jesus Seminar, Winning Religious Education Grants, and more. Saturday early morning extras: Yoga or Walking tour of Lady Bird Lake.
Austin is the Live Music Capital of the World, so we are scheduling some of our best local talent for worship services and evening entertainment. For a quieter and more spiritual mood, we'll offer a video presentation of work by world-acclaimed artist, Andy Goldsworthy, featured on the cover of UU World, Summer 2006.
And if you've wondered why we say "Keep Austin Weird," now's your chance to find out. Please plan to join us for a memorable occasion. Put it on your calendar! ************ The Lady and the Tramp Bruce Guernsey As my mother's memory dims she's losing her sense of smell and can't remember the toast blackening the kitchen with smoke or sniff how nasty the breath of the dog that follows her yet from room to room, unable, himself, to hear his own bark. It's thus they get around, the wheezing old hound stone deaf baying like a smoke alarm for his amnesiac mistress whose back from petting him is bent forever as they shuffle towards the flaming toaster and split the cindered crisp that's left.
