The Farthest Bud on the Longest Branch

Jack McElroy

This program is inspired by and based on a sermon by Barbara J Pescan, Senior Minister, Unitarian Church of Evanston, Illinois, that was published in the October 2006 issue of Quest. Her sermon was titled "Not for Ourselves Alone."

Rev. Pescan's sermon focused on people and events within the Judeo-Christian tradition to which UU Congregations owe our presence today. Is it important to understand and acknowledge these historical contributions? How can we carry forward this long legacy?

In the words of Rev. Pescan, "If we are to survive beyond the middle of this century, we must find better ways to tell others who we are and what our purpose is."

The legitimate powers of government, extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But, it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods, or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." ~ Thomas Jefferson
