U F L History
Helen Ausman
The History Book is now up to
date through the year 2006. I would like to thank Sky Mitchell for her
great newsletters which provide me with so much material and for sending
pictures to Peggy; I would like to thank Peggy for printing them for me;
and I would like to thank Sheila for proof reading and help in assembling
it all.
Getting To Know
You
There just isn't enough time on
Sundays to talk with everyone and get to know each other a little better.
So we decided to form interest groups that would meet at the Fellowship on
Sundays before services. It was also decided to hold a pot luck and
clean-up session on the first Sunday of each month. Eating and working
together allow lots of time and opportunities to learn about one another.
In addition to these excellent
ideas, we will occasionally interview a member, friend or visitor and
publish the interview in the newsletter. Think of it as something like "A
Conversation With Bill Moyers."
Our first "conversation" is
with Emily Grim. Her parents joined the UFL last year after they had moved
to this area from California. Emily is an active participant in Sheila and
Jessica's YRUU class.
Sky: What
is your complete name?
Emily:
Emily Hazel Ann Bolling/Grim
Sky:
Where were you born?
Emily:
Riverside, California
Sky: When
were you born?
Emily:
July 10, 1992
Sky: Who
do you live with?
Emily: My
mom, Gelene Grim, my step-dad, Robert Marquez Senior, my stepsister,
Sydney Marquez, my sister, Allena Grim, and my brother, Robert Marquez
Junior.
Sky:
Where do you go to school?
Emily:
Canton High School
Sky: What
grade are you in?
Emily:
9th grade
Sky: Why
did you sign up for debate class?
Emily: I
took it because I knew that it was going to be a challenge and I thought
that it would be great to challenge myself. I also took debate because I
new that it would benefit me in the future and it would also help me with
my anger issues.

Sky: When
did you take the debate class?
Emily:
August of 2006 through January of 2007
Sky: What
was the teacher's name?
Emily:
Mr. Rike
Sky: What
did you learn about debating?
Emily: I
learned that it takes a lot of work, and to fake it until I felt it. I
also learned that in debate you are like a family and if you can't get
along with each other you will have problems.
Sky:
Would you like to take another debate class?
Emily:
Yes, because I loved it and it was a lot of fun.
Sky: Did
you take part in any debates outside of class? What was the debate about?
Emily:
Yes, it was about whether the federal government should give money to the
following organizations: Senior Corps, Learn and Serve America, Peace
Corps, and Citizen Corps.
Sky: How
did you prepare for it?
Emily:
Well, I studied my speech, practiced my speech, and then I meditated.
Sky: What
is the point of debating?
Emily: It
helps you get ready for the future and if someone wanted to become a
lawyer, debate would be the perfect place to start.
Sky: You
mentioned that your teacher, Mr. Rike, was killed in an automobile
accident shortly before the course ended. What was it like for you having
a teacher die suddenly like that?
Emily: It
was very hard at first but after a month or so I kind of got over the
shock that he is gone and started to think of the positive.
Sky: Are
you planning to go to college?
Emily:
Yes, I would very much like to go to college.
Sky: What
are some of the things you would like to do after you finish school?
Emily:
After college I would like to visit certain places around the world and
after that find a job and settle down and maybe have one or two kids.
Sky:
Thank you for talking with me today, Emily.
Emily:
You're welcome!
